Building a Business

open for business

Building a home based business takes hard work, determination and time.  I’d like to share some of the keys to success that I’ve learned.

1.  FOLLOW YOUR PASSION

Find a product or company that you adore.  Then you will enjoy what you do and inspire others to become passionate about your product.  We don’t always get it right the first time, but keep trying – you will reap the rewards.  Know yourself and be true to yourself.

2.  HAVE A GOAL

Decide what your goal is.  Maybe you need extra money for a vacation, to help with bills at home, to buy a new couch, to be financially successful, to be busy and have fun…whatever your goal, stay focused on it and make it happen.  Periodically refer back to your goal and make an assessment.  If you’ve lost sight of your goal, either revise your goal or break it down into smaller goals to help you reach your ultimate goal.  Have a business plan.

3.  BE ENTHUSIASTIC AND PROMOTE

Others will be attracted to you and curious about your product by the zeal that you exhibit.  Be positive and smile.  Don’t be afraid to sell – yourself and your product. Talk yourself and your product up with those around you, especially those who you know have an interest.  However, don’t be pushy and respect the views and opinions of those you’re with.  When you know someone likes your product, get them to promote your product for you by asking leading questions.  Work on your website or Facebook page.  Invite your friends over to experience a new product.  Find new ways to advertise.  Hand out samples and literature where appropriate.

4.  MAKE LISTS

Start each day with a list of 5 or 6 goals or tasks to complete for your business.  Keep your list with you and mark things off as you go.  At the end of the day, review your list.  Any task not completed, add to the next day’s list and add tasks until you have 5 or 6 to work on again.  This will help to keep you focused and let you see your accomplishments.

5.  FIND VENUES TO SELL

Maybe you can book into a Vendor’s Sale, Fair or Home Party.  Each season brings new opportunities.  Promote new products.  Go over your list or search the internet, and fill your calendar.  Make phone calls, send e-mails.  At each event you do, try to find another event to book into.  Approach stores about carrying your product.  After a while, you will find you are being invited to new events.

6.  SHARE AND LEARN

Share with other business owners.  Impart your knowledge and learn from theirs.  Usually everyone is willing to share and it is a small community among themselves.  There are associations you can join.  Share your successes and your struggles. Just because you’re in business for yourself doesn’t mean you have to be in business by yourself.
